With the development of industry and urbanization,historic blocks have always been an inevitable topic to be discussed in urban renewal around the world.In the urban renewal,historic blocks expose crises such as outdated physical space and functional decline.However,because of their important value in maintaining the continuity of cultural memory,diversity of architecture and environment and aesthetics,they have become the object of protection and revival.However,the revival of historic blocks is often simply understood and operated as commercial revival,which also leads to the dilemma of historic blocks in the current situation of urgent need for protection and preservation and facing commercial development.From the end of the nineteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century,modernism,as the mainstream trend of thought in the field of architecture and urban planning,has influenced the process of urban renewal worldwide.Cities are proud to break away from the traditional form that is considered to be bound and boldly build brand-new modern buildings and blocks.Historical blocks are regarded as obstacles to the development of urban modernization.Until the 1960 s and 1970 s,the post-modernist trend of thought rose and began to reflect on the significance of cultural continuity and cultural diversity,and the value of historical blocks was re-examined.As an important theory in the field of architecture and urban planning in the West under the trend of post-modernism,Neo-urbanism returns to the essence of city as a human settlement.It reflects on the current significance of cultural memory,neighborhood environment and life experience in the continuous innovation of urban features and functions,and affirms the ability and organizational structure significance of the continuous evolution of historical blocks.The biggest difference between the revival of historic blocks and the development mode of other areas in the city is that all kinds of revival measures need to be carried out in a special historical context and environment,not simply old as old,not to mention antique fake.If we want to preserve and maintain the cultural diversity of the blocks on the historical time axis,it will be misplaced with the efforts in the field of urban renewal.Only by combining the cultural tradition and sense of place with the contemporary economic needs,political and social conditions,can the revival of the historical blocks be truly implemented,rather than become museum-like exhibits.In the reconstruction of old cities since the founding of the People's Republic of China,many historic blocks have also been seriously damaged in the wave of demolition and construction due to the outdated recession.When the second batch of famous historical and cultural cities were published in 1986,the concept of "historic blocks" was formally put forward,which advocated the protection of blocks with more concentrated cultural relics and historical sites or with more complete local characteristics.Historic blocks began to be taken seriously as an important level of protection between single cultural relics and historic and cultural cities.At present,there are three typical revival modes of historic blocks in China: culture-commerce-residential renewal,culture-commerce-tourism leisure and culture-commerce-real estate development.The common point is to introduce certain commercial investment based on historical and cultural background,increase the vitality of old streets and gradually integrate them into the development of modern cities.After the commercialization operation,the historic blocks have stepped out of the original declining situation,but exposed the same image of the blocks caused by homogeneous commercial forms,the destruction of the cultural atmosphere of the blocks by low-end commercial forms,the contempt for the maintenance of the original functions under the development of new functions,the blind promotion of rehabilitation projects or the lack of follow-up,and so on.Finally,the revival of the blocks has fallen into a dilemma of rigidity or alienation.?Behind commerce lies the logic of standardization,high-speed,replacement or reshaping advocated by modernism.Under the background of globalization,the emphasis on local characteristics and traditional context established in the post-modernist trend of thought is also facing a crisis of deconstruction.In the process of exploring the old urban districts,Neo-urbanism holds that the districts in cities should have the characteristics of land use diversity and complex functions,instead of using zonal segregation planning.In the top-down project planning,which is common nowadays,we should return to the former local construction mode based on individuals and communities,and adopt gradual evolution to the built environment in order to maintain history.The continuity of life in the neighborhood is of great theoretical significance for us to explore the solution to the plight of the revival of historical neighborhoods.In addition,the western developed countries such as France,the United States,Japan and so on have already explored and practiced the problem of historical block revival under the background of urban renewal for a long time due to their early entry into the process of modernization.There are also many points worth learning from or drawing lessons from.In view of the dilemma in reality,combined with theory and international experience,the possible strategies for the revival of historic blocks in the merging of Commerce and culture in China lie in the following aspects: firstly,upgrade environmental facilities and maintain cultural resources in material space,protect the real historical and cultural relics,face up to capital demand and commercial injection,prevent over-exploitation through rational business layout,and consider minor rules.Secondly,we should attach importance to the inheritance of historical context and the maintenance of cultural memory in spiritual space,so as to coordinate the transformation of inner blocks with the construction of overall style,the revival of historic blocks with urban renewal,and to shape the cultural atmosphere of blocks with cultural context;thirdly,we should promote a new community network and Governance system in social space,and attach importance to legal system and management.Strong cohesion,forming a multi-party working linkage mechanism,building community-based community cultural identity.
