The Way To Increase The Legibility Of Public Space In TongZhou District

The amount of public space in city has gradually increased by the rapid economic and social development,however,the pursuit of efficiency and benefits has made the public spaces become increasingly similarity,which greatly reduces the characteristics and attraction of the city.Basing on the urban planning project-Urban Design of the Historical Area of Tongzhou South Street in Beijing,the article is discussing ways to improve the legibility of public spaces,taking the ancient urban area of Tongzhou as the research subject,when Tongzhou is being constructed as the sub-center of Beijing.The dissertation is mainly divided into three parts: concepts sorting out and theoretical research,on-site investigation and evaluation,and recognizable design practice.In the first part,On the basis of analyzing the development process of urban public spaces in China and worldwide scholars' research on urban public spaces and urban legibility,this study clarified the inherent requirements of public space legibility and established a framework for the identifiable design of public spaces,discussing the method from system and perception levels.At the part two,the factors influencing the public space in the ancient city of Tongzhou were summarized,and the summarized theoretical framework was applied to the assessment of the current status of legibility.Through multiple field investigations,the public space system is focused on the core system,boundary system,and landscape system,on the other hand,The perception design is divided into static perception and dynamic perception.In the end of the dissertation,specific plans for the public space renewal of the ancient city were proposed,aiming to enhance the legibility of the current state of the public space and meet the future development vision.The innovation of the research has the following two points: First,the theory of urban legibility was applied to the level of public space,and it was organized into two branches:system construction and perception construction.Second,the process of summarizing the identifiable design of public space is as follows: research on history and culture and natural conditions-classification of public space and determination of identifiable elements-identifiable design at different levels.This research is of great significance to the exploration of methods to improve the legibility of urban public spaces.Taking the ancient city of Tongzhou as an example for in-depth research and analysis,it further summarizes the more general method framework.Summing up from special case to general laws has certain limitations,but it can provide a framework and case support for subsequent research by other scholars.
