Historic districts not only have highly important historical and cultural values but also have unrepeatable accumulation of development. At the same time, the material environment in historic districts is aging due to lack of maintenance in the subsequent development and the internal economic vitality of historic districts is declining as well.Appropriate functional implantation methods and related planning strategies are conducive to the value display and activated utilization of the historic districts, and ultimately achieve the purpose of the sustainable development of the historic districts. Therefore, exploring the function implantation methods of constructing historical districts have important practical significance.Qingdao is the earliest practice of modern urban planning thought and theory in China.Since 2013,the Shibei District government implemented a large-scale “Shantytown Improvement” policy, which has resulted in serious hollowing of the six historic districts within the administrative area approved and published by the Municipal Government. The disappearance of community structure and original functions has indirectly damaged the material protection of historic blocks. How to correctly carry out the activated utilization and demonstrate the cultural connotation and historical value of historic districs through functional implantation, while taking into account economic development and the improvement of the quality of urban centers is an urgent issue to be considered at present. On the basis of summarizing the relevant research both in China and abroad, this thesis proposes the principle of historical districs function implantation of two goals of integrated activation and higher value, and constructs a total of five function path into practice containing value evaluation, function selection, carrier implantation, system coupling and multi-model.Besides,it puts forward measures and recommendations for the implementation mechanism are proposed for the government and society. This thesis takes historic districts in Qingdao Shibei District as the specific research object, studies and analyzes the historical evolution and value connotation, summarizing the corresponding development issues.Based on the difference of value characteristics and actual renewal conditions,it guides historic districts to define their function orientation, select suitable implantation function types and space implementation methods.Through the three levels of material space, economic development and regional linkage,it can achieve the historical and cultural protection of the historic districts, the city high-quality dynamic development and organic, harmonious, sustainable renewal. Finally, the thesis summarizes the existing problems and shortcomings of the research, and proposes a prospect of future research in related fields.
