This study first reviews the research status of the concept of "child-friendly" at home and abroad, summarizes the research trend of "child-friendly" outdoor activities venues in residential areas, and discusses how to plan and design them from the perspective of children;secondly,it analyses and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of children’s outdoor activities space and venues in actual design cases at home and abroad, and sets forth the design strategy of “child-friendly”outdoor activity venues. Finally, through the design practice, the design method of "child-friendly" outdoor sports venues in residential areas is explored. The results show that:(1)The idea of building a “child-friendly” city proposed by UNICEF at the meeting is a children-oriented design concept that aims to create a favorable environment for children’s activities and growth.Residential area,as an integral part of the city, should be given more thought on outdoor activities areas that are suitable for children.Creating a livable city environment also necessitates reasonable outdoor activities venues for children according to their psychological and behavioral characteristics developed at different age stages.(2)By analyzing the psychological and behavioral characteristics of children at different age stages in relevant literature, this paper concludes that children at different ages can be divided into 3 stages: infancy(0~3 years old),preschool age(3~6 years old)and school age(6~12 years old).Based on studies on its development at home and abroad,it can be concluded that children’s outdoor activity venues in residential areas should be designed in line with psychological and behavioral characteristics of children aged 0~12,and should also take into consideration the types and characteristics of children’s outdoor activities for better outdoor activity venues, which serves to reach the goal of “child-friendly”design concept.(3)There are certain similarities in cases of “child-friendly”outdoor activity venues in residential areas at home and abroad. These cases focus on the impact of interestingness on children,so most of the children’s sports venues and facilities are diverse and innovative, which are designed according to the characteristics of different age stages. They also pay attention to the popularity of facilities and the frequency of use.(4)In view of domestic and foreign theoretical research and classical cases, this paper holds that “child-friendly” outdoor activity venues in residential areas should be accessible,safe,recreational,multi-functional and fun.For children in infancy, outdoor activity venues should be of high safety and equipped with relatively simple activity facilities. For children at pre-school age and school age,the complexity, scale, space, and type of activities should be increased with age, which facilitates more free activities and regular activities. This can be realized using modern design methods for children’s outdoor activities featuring liveliness and vitality.(5)Taking the case of the landscape planning and design for children’s outdoor activity venues in Yulongwan residential area in Hengshui city as an example, the design follows the “child-friendly” concept and the principle of accessibility. Two main outdoor activity venues for children at all age stages were built on the north and south sides of the central axis of the residential area, with smaller venues between residential clusters and green space to cover all the possible service areas. The design strategy is applied to carry out this specific design so as to create an outdoor activity environment in the residential area suitable for children.
