Vernacular architecture is an important branch of architectural heritage, and its protection has always been the focus of academic research.China has a vast territory and a long history. The once glorious agricultural civilization has spawned tens of thousands of traditional villages and diverse local architecture.Vernacular architecture has a high heritage value.Due to the rural hollowing, the aging of the population and the lack of funds, the vernacular architecture can't get the necessary repair and protection and is gradually on the verge of disappearing. Its survival status is worrying. As vernacular architecture is classified as an architectural heritage, the protection of vernacular architecture has gradually received attention. Some principles and methods in the protection of architectural heritage have an important guiding role in the protection of rural buildings. In recent years, the idea of heritage activation such as dynamic protection and rational renewal has begun to intervene in the field of architectural heritage protection, which has had a profound impact on the protection of vernacular architecture. The renewal-oriented protection model has gradually entered the field of vernacular architecture protection.Since the 1980 s,rural tourism has flourished. The traditional villages have regained their vitality and the vernacular architecture has been preserved in the process of tourism development. This not only proves that the update is also one of the means of protection, but also shows that it is feasible to realize the protection of local architecture by tourism development as the activation mechanism..In this context, this paper draws on some principles and methods in the theory of architectural heritage protection, sets the framework system of vernacular architecture protection in tourism-oriented villages, and takes the evolution law of tourism-type rural settlements as the practical basis to generate renovation design strategy which can be used to guide the practical protection and renewal work of vernacular architecture in tourism-type villages from the perspective of tourism development. This paper takes the courtyard-style local architecture as the research object. On the basis of visiting some northern tourism-type villages in the field, this paper focuses on the investigation of the three tourism-type villages in Chuanfangyu town,Jixian,Tianjin, and preliminary study on their evolution patterns and characteristics of settlement space in these three tourism-type villages. The author selects the vernacular architecture with obvious spatial characteristics changes during the development of tourism, measuring the dimensions, drawing planes, and statistically sorting them.At the same time, the author interviewed rural residents to gain an in-depth understanding of the changes in the local architectural space before and after the development of rural tourism.Based on this, the design strategy of the courtyard-style vernacular architecture renewal from the perspective of tourism development is generated, including the reconstruction of the courtyard space, the reorganization of the plane function and the reshaping of the local style. Finally, this paper takes the Peitun Old Street in Peitun Village of Fuzhou Bay,Jinpu New District,Dalian City,Liaoning Province as the practice object, and carries out the update design from the perspective of tourism development. The author gradually applies the previously proposed strategy to the protection and update work of vernacular architecture in the base, realizing that vernacular architecture can be updated in tourism, protected in renewal, and passed on in protection. The author hopes that this case can provide some reference and guidance for the protection and renewal of the courtyard-style vernacular architecture in China's tourist-oriented villages.
