The unique topography and climatic conditions in the mountainous region of west Henan province gave birth to a distinctive settlements and construction with regional characteristics. The Settlements’ perfect integration with the mountain environment together with the traditional constructing wisdom of acclimatizing local materials created a unique space and style of the settlement and accumulated rich local culture and long history. However, in an era when globalization, modernization and urbanization coexist, these settlements as carrier of diverse geographical and cultural traditions, are facing an embarrassing situation with grim historical challenges of the times. A study on the adaptability of traditional settlement is imperative.In this thesis, the author selects Wuya Village as the research subject, which is located in Neixiang County of Henan Province. The paper discusses the environmental factors, such as topography, local materials and weather conditions, and on the basis of them analyzes the characteristics the traditional settlements of Wuya Village have on the aspects of the site, material selection, spatial layout and building construction. The paper also studies how the traditional settlements in Wuya Village adapt to the natural environment of western Henan Province in its evolution process, and the efficiency they have utilized the local materials in the building process. The distinctive regional characteristics and valuable construction experience are also is summarized in this thesis. Meanwhile, by the depth analysis of contemporary values of traditional settlement in Wuya Village, the paper presents the sustainable adaptability, strategies and measures for its topology updating, in order to lead a better adapt to the modern natural and human environment and to realize the contemporary value of traditional settlement and its sustainable development.
