In today's dynamic business environment,increased globalization,with social,economic and technological developments has resulted with a fierce competition between and among companies and state owned enterprises.Talent shortage being identified as a salient issue globally;had caused competition even in the labor market.Thus,this had made it crucially important and mandatory for enterprises both private and public to retain their existing valuable employees,although it is a challenging issue encountered by companies and enterprises across the globe especially the public sector of Sierra Leone.In the midst of these employee's retention challenges,the Sierra Leone Ports Authority(SLPA)among other public enterprises has stand tall in retaining its talented employees.Thus,the purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the major motivation factors implement by SLPA which has influenced the retention of its employees.The study also tried to investigate the problems associated with employee retention in Sierra Leone public sector and how to remedy these problems.Chapter one introduces this study,by providing the background and significance of the study,problem statement and about SLPA,research objectives,questions and organization of the study.Chapter two includes a review of literature that laid the foundation for understanding the topic of the study.It provides an idea on the concept of employee retention and motivation.Chapter three discussed the research methodology which includes how the study is design,area of the study and sample size,and method and tools used in collecting the data.Chapter four includes findings,analysis and presentation of the data.The findings on answering the research questions indicated that factors including Training and Career Development,Attractive Salary and Benefits,Reward and Recognition,and Working Relationship are those that influence employee retention in SLPA.While factors such as unfair promotion,poor appraisal system,and low salary scale,poor working environment,training and career growth,and political interference are those that crate room for employee's to quite the public sector.Chapter five discussed the main findings with summary,conclusion and recommendations for the study is provided.
