Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou,built during 1962 to 1966,is a distinctive part of Lingnan modern architectures.The sites and construction time of these buildings are close,and the architects who participated in are nearly the same.It makes these buildings an architectural community.Previous studies on modern court-yard buildings such as Shuangxi Villa and Shanzhuang Villa can be divided into two phases.The designers of these architectures introduced the projects and built a paradigm in the earlier phase,while in the later one systematic narrative and case studies are completed.With all these solid works,a theory system was developed under the frame of Lingnan Architectural School.Taking architectural community as a new point of penetration,this thesis reinterprets Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain based on previous studies.The aim is to splice existing study results and to fill in the gaps between themThrough the historical study on development of Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain,this thesis focuses on the core question that how did these Lingnan modern architectures achieve the inner self-realization and external paradigm establishment,and how did these two processes influence each other?The original design paper of Songtao Villa and mapping work on current situation of Shuangxi Villa and Songtao Villa make it possible to do the comparative study on the architectural community,while the discovery of relationship between entity and concept is mainly based on the reinterpretation of existing literatureThe discussion is based on the three stages of emergence and development of Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain.Early research and study on traditional Lingnan court-yard garden is the first stage,in which basic elements of garden buildings and the approach to arrange the building groups were summarized.These characteristics of Lingnan court-yard garden were taken into use in the garden restaurant design by Mo Bozhi in late 1950s.In the design and construction process of Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain,characteristics of traditional garden were transferred in different ways by different architects,with consideration of various topographic condition and functional requirements.The comparative study on Shuangxi Villa,Songtao Villa and Shanzhuang Villa is going to reveal the influence between group and individuals.After being put into use,Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain were introduced to architecture field during late 1970s to 1980s.The third part of discussion focus on the response of later architectural practices and discourses from the perspective of“Concept-Entity-Paradigm",which helps to understand the establishment of typical Lingnan court-yard garden.In conclusion,Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings in Baiyun Mountain are fundamental and centralized practices in the origin time of Lingnan Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings.These buildings respond to the woodland and took advantage of old sites.Meanwhile they realized the inheritance and transformation of traditional court-yard garden design philosophy through architectural elements and composition.The emergence and development of Lingnan Modern Court-yard Garden Buildings is a process which shows the correspondence between text and objects and the entanglement of ideas and entities.
