Study On Court Garden Design Of Modern City Hotels In Lingnan

Hotel architecture has an over three thousand years history in the Chinese culture. With the rapid development of economy in recent years, the industry of modern city hotel has been advancing very fast. Lingnan area has its own landscape and history; furthermore, it has long been regarded as the south door of China, therefore Lingnan has formed a unique culture as well as a special architecture style. Therewithin the Lingnan court gardens are particularly attractive. As the theory of local architecture maturates, the technique of modern hotel architecture and the art of classical Lingnan court gardens will certainly combine and evolve to generate new forms of modern hotels in the Lingnan area. This dissertation summarizes the development of city hotels in the Lingnan area, features the layouts, structures and the art forms of modern city hotel court gardens in Lingnan, and compares them with the city hotel court gardens in foreign countries. Through these, this dissertation wishes to list out the theories that are characteristic of the Lingnan area and will be of practical use to the future design of court gardens in the city hotels in Lingnan.This dissertation includes six chapters that focus on the designs of the modern city hotel court gardens in Lingnan cities.Chapter1is the introduction. It defines the theme of the dissertation from various aspects including the research subject, research background, aims and meanings of this study, methods and frameworks of this study, etc.Chapter2describes the history and design features of the city hotels in China as a whole and the Lingnan area as a particular.Chapter3dissects the layout and structure of city hotel court gardens in Lingnan.Chapter4explains the design elements in city hotel court gardens in Lingnan, and analyses the art forms of them.Chapter5analyses the design of several city hotel court gardens from other areas of China as well as from abroad, aiming to bring in some useful experiences and thoughts for designing city hotels in Lingnan.Chapter6summarizes the major points of this dissertation, brings out the author’s perspective on the future development of city hotels, and lists some existing problems in this area which invite some revisions. Through this process the author hopes to achieve a more thorough and better understanding of the area of city hotel court gardens in the Lingnan cities, and hopes to bring in some inspirations for the readers.
