A Preliminary Study On The Western Modern Garden

With rapid urban expanded in China, the green areas and the recreation spaces have been impacted rigorously. Garden has the obvious advantage in improving and advancing the quality of living environment by right of small scale. With the development of several thousand years, Chinese traditional garden has come to a very high level on the theory and practice. But it can not entirely be fit for the need of the large population of the city today. So we need the progressing experiences and theoretic study of western modern garden to develop the modern garden in China.In order to understand western modern garden easily, this thesis introduced the concept of garden and others about garden concisely, and then introduced the general development of western traditional garden art. The western traditional garden has followed formal style garden idea of the ancient Egypt and Greece all along, till 18th century the informal style landscape garden appeared in British under the influence of the eastern garden culture.Many factors affect the forming and development of western modern garden. This thesis analysed the environment and background around western modern garden from four aspects.The development of western modern garden is divided into several phases, from the beginning of the Arts And Crafts Movement in English and Art Nouveau, with the influence of the Japanese garden style, modern garden appeared in the "Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes" with simple and free form, so the modern garden began. Then all kinds of art thought and movement impacted garden designers, so bring on a revolution of garden, and the modern garden gradually came to a ripe stage. With the appearance of the ecological design, some new requirement will be advanced on the future garden.Except succeeding the excellent traits of traditional garden, Western modern garden expresses a lot of new traits. It evolves some new styles, and this thesis analysed some kinds of these styles concisely.It has been about eighty years since the modern garden appeared, during the course many outstanding works rushed out. In order to understand the modern garden deeply, this thesis introduced and analysed some excellent works.Through the study of western modern garden, it could be concluded that the garden design changes any way, and it follows current fashion closely. An excellent garden work is always an outcome integrating with function, art, technology or even the ecological science.
