With the gradual growth of the aging population, the severity of elderly care problem in China has gradually emerged, and the mode of residential elderly care has become the elderly care trend vigorously advocated by the nation. The lack of use experience of the elderly integrated in the construction of urban residential areas in the past has led to the increasingly acute contradiction between the characteristics of walking space in residential areas and the walking needs of the elderly, which has brought some obstacles to the development of elderly care in residential areas.Under the background of aging, this paper discusses the space demands of elderly people’s walking travel and establishes the correlation between the use frequency of walking space and visual indicators by combining the characteristics of visual degradation to find out the problems existing in residential areas and put forward suggestions suitable for the elderly.Starting from the visual needs of the elderly, this paper analyzes the elements from two aspects of spatial planning and visual perception through sorting out the theory between visual and spatial relation of the elderly.Meanwhile, integrated with the behavior characteristics of the elderly,it inducts the walking space as two parts of dynamic walking space and static walking space. On this basis,a spatial index system based on visual analysis is further constructed by combining expert opinions. This paper took phase 1 and phase 2 of Taoyuan residential area in Shenzhen as the object of study, and collected data and basic information of elderly’s walking behavior through face-to-face questionnaire survey and field investigated six visual indicators data of walking space within the scope of the study at the same time.Later, the visual induction charts of day, night, dynamic walking space and static walking space were respectively calculated according to the survey data.SPSS software was used to calculate the correlation degree between six visual indicators and spatial use frequency with emphasis on analyzing the average illumination index highly correlated with nighttime use frequency and a reasonable experiment was designed to explore the illuminance and color temperature conditions suitable for elderly people’s night travel. On the basis of the correlation between the measured data of the index and the frequency of space use,the proposed optimization value of the index is determined to serve as the optimization basis for the walking space of the residential area. The study of relevant visual indicators and optimization strategy in this paper has certain social significance and reference value for the construction direction of suitable for the elderly in present residential areas.
