Chinese culture is vague, emerged from which Taoism has exerted a great influence on Chinese people’s thought, literature, art and so on.Famous scholar Ye Lang even regarded the aesthetic part of Taoism as the beginning of Chinese historical aesthetics.Taoism influenced the landscape painting in China and thus the construction of Chinese classical gardens.Wang Shu as the architect of China’s first Pritzker architecture prize is the new force on behalf of the Chinese contemporary architecture, his works everywhere showing admiration for Chinese culture.Wang Shu has great interests in landscape painting and awe of classical Chinese gardening culture. He likes Chinese culture revering the “Natural philosophy”,which also reflects the infiltration and influence of Taoism on his design concept.Firstly,This paper defines the research scope through the clear definition of Taoism and sums up the aesthetic view of Taoism, which respectively are: Natural beauty,Subtle beauty,Artistic conception. Then, the paper summarizes the concept of human settlements in Taoism, which respectively are “the Mutual Compliance between Nature and Human”,“Tao”,“Yinyang”,“Contentment” and “Usefulness through Uselessness”.In the third part of the paper, through summarizing the embodiment of Taoism in the layout, material color and space of traditional architectural construction,it is concluded that Taoism has great influence and guiding value on the construction of ancient Chinese architecture, and is the theoretical guidance for the construction of architectural design of Chinese culture. The fourth part includes the comparisons of “Tao” and Wang Shu’s “natural philosophy”,comparisons of “Manifest plainness” in Taoism and the “Circular construction” strategy used by Wang Shu and comparison of “Yin-yang complementarity” and Wang Shu’s “Circuitous” in his works. It also analyses Wang Shu’s thought of “Similarity,Similarity and Difference” and “Module gardening”,and clarify the influence of Taoism in Wang Shu’s architectural works and thought.Further In the fifth chapter, the practical significance of Taoism in today’s architectural design is explored from Wang Shu’s case. This paper tries to find out the “gene” suitable for the development of Chinese modern and contemporary architecture from the source of Chinese culture through the excavation of traditional Taoism.Because culture has the characteristics of The Times, contemporary problems cannot be completely solved from the traditional culture, the paper expects to stimulate the traditional consciousness in contemporary architectural design with a critical perspective and cultural introspection, and bring enlightenment to the creation of contemporary architecture from an original perspective.
