In2012, the Pritzker Architecture Prize known as the Noble Award in the constructionindustry got the first Chinese winner, the native architect Wang Shu. Actually, there aremany excellent architects in China. And Wang Shu’s appear out of blue winning attracted thefocus of China, even the whole world on him and his architectural concept.Under the condition of the Western civilization’s outputting and becoming themainstream of world civilization, Chinese tradition culture is suffering from the inevitabledecline and gradually disappearing. Also, Chinese traditiona l architecture can not escape fromthe same fate. The buildings those with the national heritage, traditional culture and regionalcharacteristics have disappeared, replaced with the modern buildings which based on theWestern civilization. There is no place to show the Chinese traditional buildings’ features, thedifferences among regions are gradually disappearing, all the cities are becoming the same.Wang Shu was deeply influenced by Chinese traditional culture and calling himself as aliterati. He holds a calm state of mind in this rapid world. Not getting involved with the flashyworld, he mixed Chinese traditional culture with the buildings with great creativity, renewedthe concept and the soul of Chinese traditional buildings. In Wang Shu’s design, the buildings are not bounded by function, form, site and so on.The buildings he designed are in freely composition, flexible space and various functions. Heorganized the infrastructure by replacing aisles and stairs by ramps. The building ups anddowns according to the mountain and the indoor space are well-proportioned with variousheights. The hanging ramps ups and downs with the building. Wang Shu’s buildings areconcise in form, getting along well with the nature and make themselves a part of the nat ure.He pays more attention to the whole environment instead of a single building. Dealing withthe details, he makes use of various elements and converts into new forms to show in thebuildings. Wang Shu’s preference in Chinese gardens makes him using more gardening skillsand concepts to build a environment that people could be completely integrated with thenature. Speaking of the material choosing, Wang Shu uses the local materials to show thenative culture features. Using a lot of recycling bricks and tiles makes the buildings look like having gone through hundreds of years. His amateurish spirit of philosophy andconstruction idea of craftsman makes his work gladdening the heart and refreshing the mind.Feeling Wang Shu’s buildings carefully, you can find the inside information of traditionalculture of China, the memory of the past days, and also the sense of times. Although thesystem is still not mature enough yet, his creative concept provides a new thinking of thedevelopment of the construction industry.
