Hainan is located in the southern border of China.In modern times,it was an island with agriculture as the main industry and less developed economy.However,Hainan island has a relatively superior geographical position in international trade.Haikou is located in the north of Hainan island,facing the Lleizhou peninsula of the mainland across the sea,which is the throat of communication between Hainan island and the mainland.Haikou gradually became the economic center of Hainan in the modern period.Haikou Port was the only port for Hainan’s foreign exchange in the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China.In the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China,the vast majority of Hainan’s import and export trade went in and out of Haikou Port.But the condition of shipping berth of Haikou Port is poorer,still can be used in times of sailing boat,as the rise of steamship,Haikou Port also produces change gradually.The thesis is divided into four parts.The introduction part reviews the academic research on Hainan’s trade and Haikou Port from the late Qing dynasty to the Republic of China.Chapter one introduces the evolution of Haikou Port in ancient times.The second chapter discusses the expansion of Hainan’s trade,the emergence of modern shipping facilities in Haikou Port,the occupation of Haikou by foreign shipping forces,the trade routes through Haikou and the surge of the number of overseas people in Hainan from the establishment of Kiungchow Customs to the end of the first world war.The third chapter mainly discusses the new changes of Hainan’s shipping and trade development after the first world war.Due to the increasing influence of external economic environment,with the development of trade,Haikou Port has been constructed to a certain extent,the port road has been expanded on a large scale,and the port business is more prosperous.But Japan occupied Hainan island,and the port of Haikou became a port for transporting resources.The epilogue summarizes the development of Hainan’s trade in the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China,and concludes the driving force and law of Haikou Port’s vicissitude.The establishment of Kiungchow Customs was a very important historical event in modern Hainan.Kiungchow Customs’ trade has a far-reaching influence on Haikou city and Haikou Port,the gateway of Hainan’s foreign exchange.The study of the changes of Hainantrade and Haikou Port in the late Qing dynasty can deepen the study of modern and contemporary history of Hainan and provide reference for the construction of Hainan island free trade zone and free trade port. |
