The rapid development of urbanization has promoted the rapid growth of China's economy and the proportion of residents' energy consumption between 2000-2016 has increased year by year.Based on the data of 30 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities)in China from 2000 to 2016,this paper first describes the status quo of urbanization and residential energy consumption in China;then, based on a more in-depth analysis of the impact mechanism of urbanization on residents' energy consumption, the measurement model is empirically tested. The main conclusions obtained are:First, whether it is direct energy consumption or indirect energy consumption,China's per capita consumption of urban residents is greater than rural residents;however, per capita direct energy consumption of urban residents is first rising and then decreasing, while per capita direct energy consumptionr of rural residents is on the rise;per capita indirect energy consumption of urban residents and rural residents are on the rise, and the growth rate of the former is faster than the latter.Second, analysis of the impact mechanism shows that urbanization mainly affects residents' energy consumption through scale effect, structural effect and technological effect. These different drivers are interrelated,so the resulting impact of urbanization on residents' energy consumption cannot be easily determined.Third, empirical test results display there is a positive U-shaped relationship between residents' direct energy consumption and residents' total energy consumption and the urbanization rate, while the relationship between residents' indirect energy consumption and urbanization rate is a linear positive correlation. The impact of urbanization on the direct energy consumption of the eastern, central and western residents is all on the right side of the U-shaped curve;it has a significant effect on the indirect energy consumption of residents in the central region, but has little effect on the eastern and western regions.Fourth, the impact of economic development is significantly positive. The impact of population agglomeration on residents' direct energy consumption is negatively correlated, while the impact on residents' indirect energy consumption is positively correlated. However, its influence in the eastern, central and western regions is different.Moderate population agglomeration is conducive to reducing energy consumption of residents, but excessive population agglomeration is not.Based on the above conclusions,we should continue to increase the development of clean energy and energy-saving technologies, correctly guide residents' lifestyles and enhance residents' awareness of energy conservation;develop small and medium-sized cities and towns;adjust China's GDP growth rate to a suitable "station".
