The Research Of Ge Yuliang's Gardening And Rockery Art

Ge Yuliang was the most famous landscape architect in the middle and late Qing dynasty.He and Zhang Nanyuan,a master of gardening and rockery art,were called ‘two peak gardening talents in the past three hundred years' by a writer Hong Liangji in the Qing dynasty.Another architectural theorist Cao Xun states that the death of Ge Yuliang is the sign of the end of ancient Chinese gardening and rockery art.Therefore,it is a great value to research and study Ge's techniques of gardening and rockery art.This paper discusses the art works of Ge Yuliang on rockery art and gardening.It will focus on his thoughts and techniques.There has been provided a good foundation for this study based on the previous historical researches and the interpretation of traditional rockery art theory,and it will be the historical premise of this study.The study will try to analyze the relationship between gardening,rockery and painting in Chinese history,as well as the embodiment of painting in Ge Yuliang's rockery art works.It also discusses the correlation between Ge Yuliang and Shi Tao's thoughts and techniques,depending on their rockery art works.As a result,the study will also summarize the concepts of ‘painting' in Ge Yuliang's rockery art works.Based on comparing the typical architects and their thoughts and methods on gardening and rockery art during the Ming and Qing dynasties,thisstudy also researches Zhang Nanyuan and Ji Cheng,who are two typical gardeners and landscapers in Chinese Gardening history,especially the period between Ming and early Qing dynasty.By discussing the influence of their thoughts and techniques on Ge Yuliang,and comparing their art works and creating methods,to explain Ge's different features and identify his unique values on Chinese Gardening and rockery art.Through this research and study,the evolution processes of the development of rockery art in the Ming and Qing dynasties can be seen.Therefore,to summarize Ge Yuliang's artistic characteristics of the rockery art,as well as his influences on rockery art in Chinese gardening history.
