A Study On The Art Of Horticulture In Yangzhou

Chinese classical garden is greatly famous in the gardening world for its long history and unique ideas. He Garden, located in Yangzhou, Jiang Su province, which was architected in late Qing Dynasty, is one of typical examples. This research aims to investigate the He Garden from the point view of analyzing landscape elements. Through generalizing the key elements of the garden landscaping and picturing its artic feature to show the unique exquisite art characteries, so as to enhance the protection and heritage of gardening art, and also to provide material for the modern city landscape design.The thesis consists of three parts. The first part begins with the interpretation of a large amount of the literature review, comprehensively illustrating the location, historical development, state of repair, the owner’s background and the main attractions of He Garden. Through system comparing the current garden layout with the plan which was documented in history, sorting out the original landscape and the state of repair, analyzing the difference of space variation and displaying its dynamic development process, to provide an intuitive basis for the landscape gardening art research of He Garden. The second part focuses on exquisitely analyzing the artistic characteristics of the architecting of He Garden by the means of surveying, mapping, digital assistance and graphic investigation. In the aspect of architecture, He Garden not only stick to its own gardening idea, but also combine the indigenous and foreign cultures under the push of traditional garden art, which explores more art forms of architecture and landscape skill; From the point view of water system layout art, the water body is divided into point, line, surface according to the shape, size and location, and also summarizes the false-true, hid-hidden and curve-straight water landscape skills based on analyzing water surface segmentation, waterfront and water level of water feature in He Garden; From the perspective of garden rock’s scape, this research also investigates on art scene between rock and other gardening elements on the basis of rock feature and rockery layout; Moreover, this paper discusses the planting design in He Garden such as the theme of scene, space compartmentation and building set off by site surveying and graphic analysis. Finally, the third part summarizes and reviews the art of gardening mentioned above, and presents the future prospects of this research.
