The rise of ancient village tourism gives traditional villages in Huizhou a chance to reproduce the prosperity of the past, but they also face the crisis caused by the lack of protection and development destruction. The public space of traditional villages in Huizhou is an important place for social order and village culture in the development of villages. It is also the most import, ant place for carrying the activities of villagers and tourists, and it is also the embodiment of the value of village tourism. Therefore, under the current tourism development background,it is of great significance to study the protection and development of public space in Huizhou traditional villages. In this study, the public space of traditional villages in Huizhou is taken as the research object, and the methods of typification, behavior observation and eye movement experiment are used to conduct field investigation and related experiments on the public space of traditional villages. The relationship between space and tourists' ehavior is analyzed from two aspects of visual and behavioral characteristics.Firstly, the researcher divides the traditional village public space of Huizhou into three types:point, line and plane, and grasps the characteristics of the three types of public space from the angles of space shape, scale, boundary, color and elements.Secondly, the visual behavior of tourists is taken as the research object, and the visual behavior of tourists in the process of visiting is simulated by eye movement experiment. The relationship between spatial elements and visual characteristics of tourists is analyzed. It is concluded that commercial advertisements and public facilities are the key points of space renovation, characteristic scenic spots and building entrance are the key points of space protection and renovation, while green planting and transmission of water body are the key points.System components are the key to improve the quality of space.Thirdly, the behavior of tourists in the traditional village public space is analyzed by the method of behavior observation, and the relationship between space and tourism behavior is studied. It is known that the evocative ability of point space, line space and area space to tourists, behavior decreases in turn, and the relationship between various kinds of behavior and specific spatial elements:good landscape conditions and suitable site conditions for painting have a strong attraction for painting behavior;characteristic scenic spots and landscape conditions have a great impact on viewing behavior;photography and viewing behavior have a great impact on landscape environment. There are certain requirements, the requirement of the photographic behavior to the landscape environmeot is higher than that of the venue, while the viewing behavior is more inclined to the area where multiple scenery can be appreciated.Recreational behavior is closely related to the components and facilities that can provide recreation in space. Finally, combined with the previous research results, the paper puts forward optimization strategies for public space from four levels:village development orientation, village planning, space transformation and village management. In the space transformation level,it puts forward specific suggestions for space optimization and promotion from three aspects:space structure optimization and upgrading, awakening the historical memory of space and implantation of public activities. This study provides suggestions for the optimization and upgrading of public space for Huizhou traditional villages in the process of tourism development, and provides relevant guidance for villages preparing for tourism development, with a view to contributing to the protection and development of Huizhou traditional villages.
