More and more safety problems have arisen due to inadequate maintenance and management in the early 21 st century.Previously, the maintenance were paid less attention than construction in the field of bridge engineering.Lately, the maintenance were paid the same attention as construction. However, problems such as low technical means, low efficiency, low informatization level, and data isolated island still exist in the.field of the bridge maintenance and management. In recent years, the research and application of BIM have been developed fast. But the application of BIM in the bridge field is obviously weaker than that in the construction field, and the application in the stage of maintenance is obviously weaker than the design and construction stages. To develop bridge maintenance management system based on BIM technology can effectively solve many problems existing in the current bridge maintenance stage. For this reason, this paper makes a corresponding exploration and research on the construction and development of BIM-based bridge maintenance management system.First, based on the research of the origin and definition of BIM,some technical advantages of BIM in the bridge maintenance were derived. Then BIM was discussed from three perspectivesin:BIM standards,BIM software and BIM applications. The above studies laid the foundation for the development of bridge maintenance management systems using BIM technology. Then,on the basis of the basic theories related to the management information systems, the development steps of the BIM-based bridge maintenance management system were combed.According to the characteristics of BIM technology and the characteristics of the bridge professional, the entire system was divided into three modules: data layer, model layer, and function layer. The three modules were independent and related to each other. Finally, the data layer, the model layer, and the function layer were discussed in detail.Regarding the model layer,a structured modeling method based on the Autodesk Inventor was first proposed.Based on the summary of the traditional bridge BIM model establishment method, the traditional BIM modeling method can not meet the needs of the bridge maintenance management business. After validating the feasibility of modeling through using the Inventor, the BIM model of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Bridge was established.and the modeling steps were summarized.Regarding the data layer, the method of bridge information classification and coding based on the IFD standard was first proposed. The classification and coding of information was the basis for establishing the database.IFD-based information classification and coding would be beneficial to avoid problems such as the data isolated island. The IFD standard adopted the ISO12006-2 classification method based on the process model, and divided the information in the entire life cycle of the bridge project into construction resources, construction process, and construction results. This paper focused on the exploration of information classification and coding concerning bridge maintenance management and formed "Table 71-Bridge Types","Table 72-Bridge Engineering Components","Table 41-Properties","Table 74-Bridge Project Behavior","Table 78-Bridge Engineering".This conformed to the principle of systematicity, scientificity, scalability, compatibility, and usability.Other phases of other businesses can be expanded on this basis, laying the foundation for the establishment of bridge BIM maintenance management system.Regarding the function layer, combined with BIM-based bridge maintenance management system for Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Bridge,we would study how to use BIM technology to improve the efficiency of specific services. The main function modules included static information review, inspection and evaluation, maintenance, and auxiliary decision-making.
