Since the reform and opening up,the housing construction of Jingjiang Town has exhibited an unprecedented scale and appearance, along with the overall development of urban economy and society,as well as the reform of the urban land use system and the urban housing system. However, relevant theoretical studies are very deficient, compared with the large-scale and diverse housing construction practices, and systematic and specialized researches on the development of urban housing in Jingjiang are still not visible. In view of the above background, this study combs and explores the change of residential modes in Jingjiang between 1978 and 2017 from the perspective of architecture and housing and living science, adopting a multidisciplinary approach and a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate a large number of urban houses in Jingjiang. It is hoped to make up for the shortcomings of theoretical research in this area, provide reference for understanding the development of residential modes inJingjiang, and furnish historical data for further research.Based on a review and numerous investigations of the development of the Jingjiang City and the history of urban housing construction in the past 40 years, the research investigates and combs the evolution of spatial composition and structure of the residence in Jingjiang from the three levels of home units, residential building, and residential communities, and explores the causes of the changes. The conclusions are as follows:From the level of home units, the living space are diversified from mixed to separated, while the space for kitchen and bathroom is transferred from the outside to the inside, increasing the complete rate of housing. In other spaces, the halls and storage rooms experienced from nothing, the balconies have gone from single to multiple, and the form of entering housing tends to multivariate. The structure of home units becomes complicated from simple, with the appearance of split-level,duplex,and thermocline home units that require vertical traffic. The main reason for these changes is the change in living requirements and the living standard. From the level of residential building, the type of home unit that constitutes a single residential building gradually urdergoes from a room to a room type,a hall type, and a living type in the 21 st century, and the layout and area of the traffic space vary depending on the height of the residence. The structure of residential building changes from single to diverse, and the arrangement of the bottom and top space of the monomer tends to be multiple, and the profile combination is simple to complex. The main causes of these changes are the improvement of living standards and the development of technical specifications. From the level of residential community, residential buildings have undergone a transition from low-rise to multi-storey to high-rise,which in turn affects their body shape and size.Public service facilities have increased in type and quantity, making the community more functional. The structure of living community changes from varied to single, from natural to normative, and manifests itself in the whole structure of the community, the combination of residential groups and the layout of public service facilities. The main causes of these changes are the development of construction technology, restrictions of land use,and the constraints of institutional regulations.
