Driven by the real estate boom, the practice of collective housing in China has achieved great development in the past decade. However, because of the short development time and excessive development speed, problems such as the homogenization of residential buildings and low quality have emerged through the country. The purpose of this thesis is to learn from Japan’s long-term practice, researches and explorations of collective housing, and to analyse how the collective housing development in Japan is closely integrated with the lifestyle of urban residents at that time.Taking the "lifestyle" as an entry point, the paper studies how the way of life of Japanese residents influences the spatial evolution of collective housing through literature research, field research, qualitative evaluation, and comparative analysis. The article is roughly divided into four parts:The first part is an introduction. It summarizes the research background of the article and the research status at home and abroad, defines the research object and the scope of research, clarifies the content of the article research and research methods, and summarizes the overall framework of the article. The second part mainly analyses the characteristics of lifestyle in Japanese traditional dwellings, and then studies the spatial form of traditional dwellings in Japan and the living needs and aesthetic needs of the dwellers in terms of partial and overall layout. The article summarizes the two main characteristics of the lifestyle of traditional Japanese houses:1.Barefooted,2.Sit on the floor or use chairs.Based on these two characteristics, study the partial spatial forms and overall spatial forms in traditional Japanese residential buildings. The third part first elaborates on the main types of existing collective housing in Japan, and then study classic cases of the three major periods:after the Great East Japan Earthquake, after the Second World War,and after the Japanese bubble economy bursts. The study of the design process analyses how the Japanese architecture community responded to the transformation of urban residents’ lifestyles in the design of collective housing. The fourth part is the conclusion and outlook. It summarizes the article’s discussion on how the way of lifestyle affects the form of the collective housings, and then points out how the spatial form of collective housing reflects the lifestyle of urban residents, and points out the significance of these conclusions for our collective housing construction in the future. The article innovatively uses "lifestyle" as an important factor in the analysis of the collective housing design process, takes lifestyle changing as the inner motivation of the evolution of the collective housing in Japan.
