As a space for evaluating dwelling modernization,kitchen is crucial in traditional dwelling renovation.Traditional Dong kitchens have developed in three stages,including traditional fire place,traditional fire place-firewood stove mixed,multiple stoves mixed.Indoor air pollution is still significant in Dong Dwellings,due to the absence of quantitative analysis and design guideline.It will be likely to cause various respiratory and lung diseases,even death,if occupants were exposed in high level pollutants for long periods.This is also considered as Sick Building Syndrome(SBS).With the publication of Rural Revitalization Plan(2018-2022)in 2018,how to plan living spaces and improve environment in rural areas is being concerned.In this background,the research objective was rural kitchens in southern traditional Dong dwellings.Gaobu village in Tongdao,Hunan Province was taken as an example.The kitchens development and current situation were clarified based on field research.Traditional fire place was considered as a significant factor during Dong's kitchen renovation.Indoor air monitoring was carried on,which could figure out Indoor Air Quality(IAQ)in Dong's kitchens.Both Air Quality Index(AQI)and questionnaire survey were introduced for objective and subjective evaluation.It presented that mechanical ventilation did not affect IAQ as general cognition.Simultaneously,influence factors,including kitchen volume,plan,windows and doors,mechanical ventilation,fuel,occupant behaviours,were analyzed by quantitative and qualitative methods.Based on this,IAQ improvement principles and design strategies for Dong's kitchen were proposed.The design strategies should obey the principles that affordable and low-tech,adaptive function,adaptive culture,eco-environment.The specific design strategies included: space design,equipment design,and detailed design.Last but not least,a traditional fire place-firewood stove mixed kitchen and two multiple stoves mixed kitchens(cross ventilation and single ventilation kitchens)were selected for renovation.Dynamic simulation software,PHOENICS was adopted for the Age of Air simulation.The results showed that the Age of Air could be declined by half after kitchen renovation.This also illustrated that the design strategies proposed by this research could improve kitchen IAQ effectively.
