Since the last century, safety engineering has developed more than 60 years. The number of undergraduate colleges offering safety engineering has increased rapidly.By 2017,the number has increased to 198.Due to the limited time of running safety engineering education, the training mode is different regarding to different industry backgrounds which involve petroleum, chemical, construction, fire protection and many other aspects. The professional curriculum and teaching content of each college are inconsistent.Over the years, safety engineering professional higher education knowledge system and education structure have made great progress. However, safety engineering graduates currently have employment problems such as “slow start, poor adaptability, and weak execution”.It is an exigent problem to match professional knowledge and skills of college graduates with the job requirements. The paper takes the curriculum setting of safety engineering as the research object.Firstly,it collects relevant certification manuals for safety professionals at abroad and determines the competence of safety professionals. Then it collects the undergraduate curriculum of safety engineering in China, and compares the characteristics and differences between universities. Finally,it takes the safety engineering curriculum setting of China University of Geosciences(Beijing)as an example, and proposes an optimization plan based on competence.Research indicates:(1)Occupational ability includes two dimensions: safety management and safety engineering.Safety management competence include developing and developing safety management systems, knowledge management, communication, accident analysis, contingency planning and safety training;safety engineering competence include safety monitoring and risk.Identification and risk assessment.(2)The analysis of the curriculum setting shows that the total number of professional courses in each institution is not uniform;the number of engineering courses is much higher than that of management courses;the common courses offered are mostly management courses, engineering courses. The difference is large, with many industry characteristics.(3)The course should include two modules of safety management and safety engineering: safety management module should set safety principle, safety management, safety laws and regulations, accident investigation analysis and emergency management, system safety engineering;safety engineering module should set fireproof and explosion-proof safety, electrical safety, mechanical safety, transportation safety, special equipment safety, chemical harmful factors and prevention, physical harmful factors and prevention, poisoning factors and prevention, safety ergonomics, safety psychology.
