The Study Of Women’s Clothing Culture During The Period Of The Republic Of China

The Republic of China,is an easily branded era.The period of the Republic of China is social stirring,and women’s clothing during that period is rich and colorful.Several factors such as the alternation of the new and the old,the combination of the Chinese and the Western and the women’s liberation movement gave the driving force to the formation and development of women’s clothing culture.Indeed,the social status of women in the Republic of China has been a big leap,although it is just a subtle change which is filled with hardships and frustrations.In the changes of costume,women took one small step,but for the era,it is a big step.In this paper,the author considers the May 4th Movement in 1919 and the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937 as two time points,divides the period of the Republic of China into three stages,in order to explain evolution of women’s apparel.The first stage is the period of the Republic of China from 1912 to 1918,and this stage is the mingle period in early years of the Republic of China for the compound of East and West culture and that of Robe and Chinese Jacket.The focus of the image of women in this period is the prostitute and aristocratic Miss who stood in fashion front.This paper focuses on "Dress" promulgated by the government of Xin Hai Revolution and its influence on women’s dressing.The second stage is the prime of the Republic of China from 1919 to 1936,and this is the prime stage of new idea development and women’s liberation movement.It is the booming time for female clothing development,and the focus of this period is celebrities,stars,female students,and this paper focuses on the "Uniform Rules" promulgated by the Nanjing national government in 1929,and the evolution of the development of cheongsam.The third stage is from 1937 to 1949,the years of the war,and it was a turbulent year in the face of national crisis,any mood had to give way,and the apparel development also suffered from heavy losses.In the background of war,the development of women’s dressing in this period is relatively calm.The development of dress gradually led to produce new aesthetic concept,In the background of new thoughts and social liberation,after the exploration and trying in the beginning of this period,women began to re-examine their social position,and were in pursuit of the image of women being beautiful,confident,elegant,and began to appreciate the beauty of the female body,focused on the body’s natural curve of shoulder,chest,waist,hip.Research on women’s clothing culture of the period of the Republic of China is not only out of hobbies and interests of the author about the female fashion of this time,but also out of the aim for deeply mining women’s clothing culture during the period of Republic of China.It is good and important for us to thoroughly understand fashion during this period,make reference or extraction of classical elements,and then apply them to the current fashion trends,and let this kind of costume culture have a long history of surviving.
