The "Plant Growth and Environment" course is a basic course for majors such as landscape technology and horticultural technology. The overarching goal of the course is to lay the theoretical and technical foundation for students' subsequent advanced courses. However,it is often difficult for students in secondary vocational school to meet the curriculum teaching goals, and they are also unable to meet the requirements that are set for vocational and technical education to cultivate high-quality technical and applied talents. In line with the teaching reform trend of vocational and technical education,in this study,an integrated task-driven and project-based learning approach is proposed. The newly developed approach was deployed in the teaching of "Plant Growth and Environment" course in order to improve the teaching outcome of the course, and to improve students' practical ability. For the purpose of enhancing the practical ability and professional quality of students majoring in landscape technology, the research status of project-based learning at home and abroad was first analyzed and sorted out.And the connotation, characteristics and general process of project-based learning were comparatively analyzed. The relationship between project-based learning and other teaching methods currently used in landscape technology was also analyzed for comparison.Cumulatively,an integrated task-driven and projectbased learning approach is proposed. In addition,by conducting effective questionnaire surveys and interviews, the teaching status of the "Plant Growth and Environment" course in landscape technology was investigated and analyzed.Subsequently, the theoretical basis of the integrated task-driven and project-based learning approach was applied to the teaching of the "Plant Growth and Environment" course. Finally, the project-based teaching practice was carried out,and the effectiveness of the proposed approach was evaluated by the methods of questionnaires and interviews. The experimental results showed that the integrated task-driven and project-based learning approach was applicable to the teaching of "Plant Growth and Environment " course. The newly developed approach significantly improved the students' comprehensive ability, combining theory with practice, practical and cooperation ability. At the same time, compared with the traditional teaching method, students were more interested in the proposed approach, and it is expected that this teaching method will be continued in the subsequent advanced courses.Notably, there was a significant difference in the improvement of learning ability of students of different genders.Specifically, male students outperformed female students in terms of problem-solving performance, whereas female students had a better grasp of theoretical knowledge than male students.
