A fire broke out in a building of Xihongmen town located in Beijing's southern Daxing suburb. In response to the tragedy,Beijing government conducted 40-day-long citywide safety inspections since November 20th,2017,forcing millions of migrant workers out of their homes. The forced demolitions and evictions have raised concerns that the government no longer welcomes people from poorer parts of the country dwell in its crowded mega cities. The campaign aiming to demolish illegal dwellings in each suburb ended at the end of December 2017,but the development of Beijing's cities reflected behind it is worth further recording and discussion. The government's eviction was firstly brought into action under the name of constructing urban green belts.A documantation released by Beijing government in 2001 pointed out that this is an efficient and low-cost way to acquire land without the lengthy procedure of approval and examination.Eviction,as a way of urban housing removal, has been widely adopted in the removal of Beijing's collectively owned land thereafter, and gradually became a systematic way of transforming city.Based on interviews with people who have experienced the campaign, relevant reports, and literature concerning urban planning and development, this thesis focuses on the Beijing city instead of the campaign. This thesis records the city's situation in the aftermath of the campaign and explores the motivations and gain and loss behind. This thesis also discusses possible solutions from the perspective of culture, vitality and public security of the city while the conflict between migrants and natives is also considered.Driven by the big picture of Beijing's development, this report aims to reveal the changes and contradictions of Beijing emerged after the campaign by focusing on the city's attitude towards natives and migrants, the relationship between urban resources and migrants, the standardization of urban redevelopment, the homogeneity of different blocks, the street-level public security regulations, and the contradictions resulted from the dual role of Beijing as a capital city.
