The Impact Of Kibs Imports On The Technological Structure Of Manufactured Exports

Trade in services and trade in goods are two major themes of international trade.Starts from the interrelationship between international trade in services and trade in goods,this paper aims to explore the impact of importing Knowledge Intensive Business Services-KIBS,which represents high knowledge and technology-intensive service sectors,on the technological structure of manufactured exports.Based on previous studies,we introduce PRODY index to analyze the export technical content of each manufactured goods in emerging markets.This article first estimates the product level of export technological sophistication,and then uses EXPY model to measure the national(regional) industry level of export technological sophistication.The results show that the overall export technological sophistication of manufactured goods in emerging markets has been improved obviously,but the gap with the developed countries(regions) has not narrowed.In addition,in the high-tech manufacturing industry,the gap between emerging markets and developed countries(regions) is further widening.To investigate the influence of KIBS imports on the technological structure of manufactured exports,we apply the cross-country(region) panel data of 17 emerging markets to construct the empirical model.The empirical results indicate that the import of KIBS can promote and upgrade the technological structure of manufactured exports.Therefore,we proposes that emerging markets should optimize the import trade structure of services,and increase the import of advanced KIBS to offer external support to the technology progress of domestic manufacturing.
