Improving the technical complexity of exports is of great significance to reshape the manufacturing value chain,promote the transformation and upgrading of foreign trade and achieve high-quality trade development.However,for a long time,China’s export products are mostly high-resource,high-energy input and low value-added products,and the problem of "big but not strong" manufacturing industry is still prominent.In recent years,as China vigorously pursues the two-wheel drive strategy of "manufacturing and service",the traditional single manufacturing agglomeration is gradually replaced by the synergistic agglomeration of manufacturing and productive service industries,and the synergistic agglomeration of the two industries has quietly become an important trend of industrial spatial layout in the context of high-quality trade development.In this context,this paper explores the mechanism of the synergistic agglomeration of manufacturing and productive service industries affecting the technical complexity of exports,which has certain theoretical and practical values for optimizing the industrial layout,accelerating the transformation and upgrading of foreign trade growth mode,improving the technical complexity of exports and advancing into a manufacturing power.This paper confirms that the synergistic agglomeration of manufacturing and productive services is conducive to improving the technical complexity of exports from two paths: technological innovation capacity enhancement and production efficiency improvement.Focusing on the spatial correlation between industrial synergistic agglomeration and export technological complexity based on the data of 284 cities in China from 2004 to 2019,we examine the impact of industrial synergistic agglomeration on export technological complexity through the spatial Durbin model,and finally further investigate the impact of industrial synergistic agglomeration on export technological complexity at the spatial level and industry level from the perspective of city heterogeneity and industry heterogeneity with significant differences.This paper finds that:(1)There is a significant spatial correlation between industrial synergy agglomeration and export technology complexity.(2)Industrial synergistic agglomeration has a positive spatial spillover effect on the improvement of export technology complexity.(3)Industrial collaborative agglomeration promotes the improvement of the complexity of China’s export technology through two paths:technological innovation capacity and production efficiency.(4)Further study finds that there are significant heterogeneous differences in the effects of industrial agglomeration on export technological complexity.The results of city location heterogeneity show that the synergistic industrial agglomeration is conducive to the increase of export technological complexity in the central region,unfavorable to the increase of export technological complexity in the eastern region,and insignificant to the western cities.The results of city size heterogeneity analysis show that industrial synergistic agglomeration improves the export technical complexity of large and medium-sized cities,but has a certain inhibitory effect on the improvement of export technical complexity of mega-cities and small cities.The results of manufacturing heterogeneity show that industrial agglomeration has a more significant effect on the increase of export technical complexity of capital-intensive manufacturing industries.The heterogeneity results of production service industries show that the synergistic agglomeration of non-high-end production service industries and manufacturing industries inhibits the increase of technical complexity of China’s exports,while the synergistic agglomeration of high-end production service industries and manufacturing industries helps to increase the technical complexity of China’s exports.Based on the above research findings,this paper makes suggestions from three aspects: overall level,regional level and industrial level.(1)Leveraging on the advantages of existing industrial clusters and relying on the benign agglomeration of manufacturing and productive service industries to help improve the technological sophistication of China’s urban exports.(2)The eastern region should improve the quality of industrial synergistic agglomeration,while the central region should grow its own industrial synergistic agglomeration clusters on the basis of undertaking industrial transfer,while the western cities should vigorously develop manufacturing industries as well as find local production service industries to promote both types of industries in a benign and stable development track;mega-scale and large-scale cities should continue to lead industrial synergistic agglomeration While small and medium-sized cities need to improve the quality of industrial co-integration on the basis of the scale of industrial co-integration.(3)The government should encourage capital-intensive manufacturing industries to actively participate in international product division of labor,and realize the improvement of export technology complexity by supporting the synergistic agglomeration of high-end production service and manufacturing industries. |
