Along with the industrial economic structure adjustment of our country,construction industry is currently facing with a more intense and severe challenge,which causes the profit of the construction enterprise is diminishing.More and more enterprises have to make greater profit through strengthening construction management.Construction project management is a special and complex one-time activity,which involves various resources factors such as manpower,technology,equipment,funds and a serial of steps including designing,construction preparation,construction,completion and acceptance.Construction project manager on behalf of the construction enterprise is responsible for project organization,coordination,controlling and decision-making,influencing extensively on the project performance.Therefore,which competency characteristics should a project manager,as leadership of the temporary organization-Project Manager Department,possess to commendably fulfill the responsibilities given by the enterprise has been at the centre of the academics and industry for many years.At present,the researches on the construction project manager mainly focus on the identification and application of the construction project manager competency.Particularly,how the project manager competency affects project performance has been one of the hottest research topics.Without doubt,the construction project manager competency has an important impact on the performance of the project,but the social capital of project manager,the personality traits of the project manager,maturity of project and other variables should also be considered to enrich the researches between the construction project manager competency and construction performance due to the diversity and complexity of the project,the interweaving of the construction project manager's rights,obligation and duty,the uncertainty of project performance standards.The personality traits which are stable and difficult to improve and develop through the education and training have important guiding rol in the personnel selection,training and performance prediction.Also,the personality traits can be measured by mature methods and scales.Therefore,this paper attempts to study the relationship between competency,personality of the construction project managers and construction project performance based on the theories of competency,big five personality and project performance.This paper firstly summarized the definition of the project manager competency,project performance and the big five personality(BFI)by reviewing research literatures.Based on the summarized measure items in these researches,a questionnaire about the construction project manager competency,project performance and the big five personality(BFI)was draw up.Then the questionnaires survey was conducted among the construction project managers.It was found that the reliability and validity of the data were good through analyzing the 209 valid samples.Finally,the structural equation analysis was used to verify the hypothesis.Comparing with the results of the models,the following conclusions were reached: Construction project manager competency impacts on project performance;Different dimensions of the project manager competency has different predicting effect on project performance;The effect of different dimensions of competency on project performance is changed after introducing the personality traits into the model of the relationship between the Construction project manager competency and project performance;The conscientiousness,agreeableness andextraversion personality variables in personality traits have more stable effect on the project performance than the personal characteristics;The neuroticism personality traits has a strong negative predictive effect on the project performance;The effect of the opening personality variables on the project performance is not significant.
