Public space is a field of unofficial public engagement in addition to the country's political power structure,which is a blanket term for a variety of spontaneous or organized public gathering places and institutions,including the mass media such as newspapers and magazines.As a kind of public-character institutionalized media,the supplement of The Morning Post provides the public with a platform for free dialogue and communication.With the study of three different stages of development of the supplement of The Morning Post,namely:Li dazhao's period,Sun fuyuan's period and Xu Zhimo's period,taking the whole Chinese social political and cultural environment before and after the May 4^th(1918-1926) as the main background and drawing on Habermas's public sphere theory,the paper makes comprehensive,deep analysis and studies on the role that the supplement of The Morning Post playing in the institutional construction of public sphere's structure and function during the May 4^th Period.The purpose of the paper is to reveal how the supplement of The Morning Post and the media represented by the supplement of The Morning Post created a free,open,democratic and rational discussion Spaces of public affairs.Basing on that,the paper also wants to show the role that once The Morning Post and its supplement on behalf of the print media played in the construction of public sphere during modern times.The aim of these studies is,on one hand,to give a review of the characteristic style and features at the beginning of 1920's when the contemporary Chinese social and cultural life centered on the media; on the other,to manifest from one side aspect the important role that the new supplement of paper had played in the early historical stages of Chinese modernization process.At that time,it can reveal us the extent and the situation at democratization of society,on this basis in order to observe the special relationship between the press and the society, the nation,the intellectuals,the ordinary people during this period.
