English is a language which is widely used in the communication of international economy, technology, information, etc. And it is also learnt as an important and essential curriculum in Chinese Basic Education. Teaching material, which is the main carrier of curriculum implementation, could embody the specific requirements of curriculum criterion. Moreover, teaching material is one of important factors affecting the quality of teaching. Therefore, it is rather significant to make an evaluation to teaching materials. English as a language and tool in China lies an important position in the curriculum of English teaching ,thus it has important value of evaluation to English teaching materials in. education research.The English teaching materials for primary schools, which are issued by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, were checked and accepted by the authorized committee of middle and primary school and were put into practice in 2003. And the first revised edition was issued in 2004. The research object of this thesis is the revised edition which includes twelve volumes of teaching materials. This thesis seeks to make an analysis and evaluation to these teaching materials mainly from five aspects: contents, cultural connotation, cognition, feasibility and editing level.The procedures of evaluating the teaching materials can be divided into three steps. First, through reading the teaching textbooks and their supporting resources, the author makes an contrastive analysis to the editing system, internal structure, graphic design, the adaptation of teaching methods and the supporting resources between this set of teaching materials and the other teaching materials of the same kind. Second, the author knows the evaluation of teachers and students to this set of teaching materials through questionnaires. Then all of the collected data were analyzed by SPSS software. Finally, the evaluation of teachers and students to the teaching materials is to be summarized. Third, the author makes comprehensive analysis and evaluation to the teaching materials and put some suggestions for their reform.This dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter makes a brief introduction to the research background, significance, the current studies at home and abroad and the delimitation of teaching materials. The second chapter presents the principles, methods and criteria of teaching materials evaluation. The third chapter makes a contrastive analysis to the editing system, internal structure, graphic design and the supporting resources between this set of teaching materials and the other teaching materials of the same kind. The fourth part summarizes the evaluation of teachers and students to the teaching materials by analyzing the results of questionnaires. In the last part, the author makes a comprehensive an analysis and evaluation to this set of teaching materials as well as puts forward some suggestions for their reforms.
