Through the process of learning in senior high school and educational practice in university, the author has found that English teaching materials have not been used much adequately in senior high school’s English teaching. After summarizing the materials related with English teaching materials evaluation, we have found that previous studies speak highly of the English teaching materials for senior high in our country, and that internal evaluation conclusions done by qualitative research methods are almost consistent with external evaluation conclusions done by quantitative research methods. However, the author does not completely agree with the previous research conclusions. Hence, this dissertation, taking New Standard English(the NSE)teaching materials for senior high for instance, tries to make evaluation studies on English teaching materials for senior high in our country.The NSE teaching materials for senior high is redacted according to the new National English Curriculum Standards(the NECS). This research takes the seventh level of the requirements proposed by the NECS as main evaluation standards, makes internal evaluation and external evaluation of the NSE in the aspects of language skills, language knowledge, emotional attitude, learning strategies and cultural awareness by means of documentary method, questionnaire method and interviewing method. As for research methods, this research not only uses quantitative research method which takes questionnaire method as the main form, but also uses qualitative research method which takes interviewing method as the main form. The aim of the latter is to verify the validity and reliability of quantitative research method, which is much different from the existing researches. In addition, as for research conclusions, discovering inconsistent contents between external evaluation conclusions and internal evaluation conclusions is the major finding of this research, and it is also the core contents of this dissertation.This dissertation is mainly composed of three parts.Part One(Chapter Two): This part clearly defines the definition and function of curriculum, curriculum standards, teaching materials and teaching materials evaluation, and summarizes the relation among them. Curriculum standards originate from the curriculum, while teaching materials are major carriers to embody curriculum and curriculum standards. And teaching materials evaluation is the important way of judging that whether the teaching materials reflect the curriculum goals and that whether the teaching materials correspond to the requirements of curriculum standards.Part Two(Chapter Three): This part reviews English teaching materials evaluation theories at home and abroad in the aspects of evaluation standard, evaluation method and evaluation content. English teaching materials evaluation study in foreign countries has started earlier and has had abundant achievements, however, English teaching materials evaluation study in our country has been mainly to lead in and introduce foreign research findings. But we emphasize that in order to better guide English teaching materials evaluation practice in our country, we are supposed to consider the educational environment in our country and gradually explore and establish English teaching materials evaluation systems with Chinese characteristics rather than completely and indiscriminately imitate foreign evaluation systems.Part Three(Chapter Four): This part makes internal evaluation of the NSE by means of documentary method, and the internal evaluation conclusions show that the contents of the NSE are basically in accord with the requirements of the NECS. Compared with internal evaluation conclusions, the external evaluation conclusions are different in the parts of language skills and language knowledge. And then we find that the NSE has problems mainly in two aspects, one is about the contents of the teaching materials themselves, the other is due to undeserved usages. What’s more, we analyze the underlying reasons for the problems and put forward corresponding suggestions for teaching materials composers, teachers and students.
