| The trend of globalization is becoming more and more apparent in the current world.In order to live together harmoniously,people with different cultural backgrounds need for frequent communication.As an international language,English plays an important role in the process of economic globalization.The most important function of language is communication,however,Oral English Teaching in China faces a huge challenge-too much emphasis has been putting on grammar and reading,while ignoring the training of students’ oral communication skill.It has been put forward clearly that students should master the simple speaking,writing and comprehensive language use abilities during the period of compulsory education in The New Curriculum Standards of Primary School English Compulsory Education.At present,many students can’t communicate with others in English even they have learned English for years,which arouses widespread concern.The Whole Language Approach provides a new way for oral English teaching which is aiming at authentic communication,and is also in accordance with the general requirements of The New Curriculum Standards of Primary School English Compulsory Education.The basic structure of this article are constituted by following questions:what are the real problems in today’s oral English teaching,what causes these problems and what strategies can be used to solve these problems.Through the methods as questionnaire survey,interview and classroom observation,I surveyed and interviewed teachers and students in higher grades of primary school.The subject of this research is oral English teaching situation of higher grades in primary school,because in lower grades,the content of oral English teaching is relatively simple,students mainly to learn letters and how to spell easy words,while in higher grades,the content enriches gradually and students’ level matured.Based on this,I selected their oral English teaching situation as my research subject.This paper can be divided into five parts:The first part is introduction which expounds the reasons for writing,the selection significance,and the study purpose.The literature review,core concepts,research ideas and methods are also clearly stated in this part.The second part explains the theoretical basis,practical characteristics,implement principles and methods of the whole language teaching method.The third part is the practicability to optimize the oral English teaching in primary school basing on whole language teaching method.Through elaborating students’ physical,mental characteristics and general requirements of the new curriculum standards of primary school English compulsory education,at the same time combined with the problems founded in the formal investigation,this part argued the practicability of using the"whole language approach" to improve primary school’s oral English teaching.The fourth part is the present situation investigation and problem analysis.Through studying the students,teachers and classes of higher grades in primary school,this thesis described the current situation of oral English teaching as well as the existing problems,and tried to analyze the causes of those problems.The fifth part is about the problems and solutions in primary school’s oral English teaching.There are several problems existing in the oral English teaching,such as lacking real language environment;ignoring the communicative function of language in teaching content;teaching methods are rigid,including the traditional 3P teaching method,which is lacking of interaction and cooperation,still occupies a certain position,as well as the "fake communication"which declared to be "student centered";simple and rough evaluation method and so on.On the basis of "the whole language teaching method",this study proposes four strategies to optimize oral English teaching in elementary school:first,build a real English learning environment;second,teaching content should be closely connected to daily life,including through certain themes to combine teaching content with people’s lives;add western culture in teaching content to cultivate students’ world consciousness;third,optimize oral English teaching ways,which including the use of cooperation and activities to make students be the center of the class;forth,optimize the evaluation method of oral English teaching. |
