As an important cross-cultural communicative tool, English is widely used in the society nowadays. And the people who have professional knowledge and have a good command of English is needed. Therefore, English teachers should apply the most scientific and effective teaching methods in teaching.No matter what teaching approach is adopted, the ultimate goal is to equip the learners with language skills and abilities, to improve their cross-cultural communicative competence. With the further research on teaching methods, there have been more discussions about the theoretical basis of the teaching approaches and the practical implementation in the classroom activities.Communicative Approach (CA) stresses that the aim of learning a language is communication. So trying to make all the meaningful communication is the center of all the classroom activities. This thesis analyzes the teaching method, explains its definition, its origin, as well as the foreign and the domestic studies in this field, and discusses the application of this teaching method to oral English teaching in junior middle school in the aspects of theoretical basis as well as Chinese middle school students’ English learning environment, students’motivation to learn and their characteristics of foreign language acquisition.According to the research, English teaching should apply CA on the basis of the current situation in middle school oral English teaching, so as to make it more in line with real teaching and learning situation and improve students’cross-cultural communicative competence.
