This thesis reports the findings of a study based on Communicative LanguageTeaching Approach and all of its revised teaching materials are adopted from thetextbook Advance with English. Based on some studies, such as the requirements ofOral competence in PETS2and the new curriculum reform for senior students, therecent situation in senior oral English teaching, the problems often seen in PETS2andthe features of PETS2, the author revised certain parts the textbook Advance withEnglish, including “Welcome to the unit, Reading, Project, Grammar, Task andSelf-assessment” to create different materials and tasks. The books having been chosenare from Module1to Module5, mainly from Module1to Module3.30students withsimilar English level were chosen from a grade3high middle school class in DongshanSchool in Xiangxiang, Hunan Province for the study. They were classified intodifferent groups to complete different training tasks specifically designed for theresearch project. During the4months training, varied tasks including the training ofpronunciation, sentence pattern and vocabulary, as well as conversation and freeexpression were used for teaching. Data were collected through pre-exam, mid-exam,final-exam, along with related questionnaires to see how students’ oral Englishcompetence in PETS2has been changed, which aspects have been changed andwhether prediction can be made for the passing rate of PETS2.Results of survey demonstrate that the approach the author adopted during theresearch have a good effect on improving students’ oral English competence. The dataanalysis shows that students achieved improvements in pronunciation, sentence patternand vocabulary, as well as conversation and free expression. Specifically, the advancesin pronunciation and sentence pattern are great and the effect on conversation isobvious while the achievement in free expression is not as obvious as the former two.In a word, the students attending this training get greater interest in Oral English thanbefore and their oral competences are advanced. This training contributes to a greaterpossibility of passing PETS2, improves the situation of recent oral English teachingand the students’ oral English competence in senior high school, and put therequirement of self-learning ability and class participation ability for senior students inthe new curriculum reform into practice. On the other hand, the author still has someproblems here. The author needs to do more research to deal with some problems shemet, such as the shortage of the source for data analysis, the accuracy of the answers in different question sheets and the marks of3exams(pre-exam, mid-exam, andfinal-exam), the inefficiency in researching time and environment. So the author needsto do more studies in her future research.
