High School Students' Research On The Reading Of Mathematics Textbooks

Self-study reading is an important approach to learning, and the mathematics textbook is a kind of important reading material for students in the process of learning mathematics. Therefore, it’s essential for students to learn mathematical knowledge through reading the textbooks.By studying the related literature, this thesis can define the concept of mathematics textbooks, collate the value and significance of reading the mathematics textbooks and know some the strategies of reading mathematics textbooks. This research is meant to study the status quo of senior students’ reading of mathematics textbooks through a questionnaire, and then use SPSS to analyze the differences of students’ reading situation of mathematics textbooks in different schools, grades,gender and levels, and to analyze the correlation between the reading situation of mathematics textbooks and their math grades.The conclusions of the thesis is shown as follows: (1)The current reading situation: Few students read math textbooks out of interest, and a small number of students have the habit of previewing and reviewing textbooks. Besides, some students don’t really understand the meaning of mathematics textbooks correctly, and nearly half of them spend less than a quarter of an hour reading textbooks every day.Most students mainly read the text and the examples in the textbook, but few of them employ strategic reading methods while reading. (2) the differences of the high school students’ reading situation in schools which have different teaching levels are significant; there are no significant differences in the reading of math textbooks between female high school students and male high school students; the differences of reading in high school students of different grades are significant; there are no significant differences in the reading of mathematics textbooks between science students and liberal arts students; there are significant differences in the reading between excellent students and poor students. (3)High school students’reading situation and math grades is significantly related.Finally, according to the results of the survey and interviews, some suggestions are given to teachers for their teaching work, and some tips for students on how to read the math textbooks.
