As the basis for acquiring knowledge and skills,reading plays a fundamental role in personal development and social progress.In order to cultivate talents who adapt to the development of the Times,countries request the cultivation of reading literacy.As the carrier of teaching contents,reading textbooks are of vital importance to cultivate students’ reading literacy.Therefore,this research,constructing a framework to analyze reading textbooks that support the cultivation of reading literacy empirically and exploring their characteristics,enriches related studies and provides reference for the design of the reading section of Chinese textbooks and even specialized reading textbooks in China,also provides a new idea for cultivating students’ reading literacy by using textbooks in teaching.Based on the case study and the content analysis of Reading Explorer,this paper discusses how to design reading textbooks that support the cultivation of reading literacy.Chapter one outlines the background and domestic and overseas status of this research,defines the core concepts,and points out the research significance.Chapter two clarifies the research problems,objects and methods.Chapter three summarizes the core elements of “reading literacy” through literature review,and constructs a framework for analyzing reading textbooks that support the cultivation of reading literacy based on four major systems inside textbooks.Chapter four directly responds to the research problems and analyzes whether the design of Reading Explorer supports the cultivation of reading literacy.Chapter five utilizes typical textbook fragments to explore how to design reading textbooks to support the cultivation of reading literacy.Chapter six sums up the research results,puts forward the enlightenment,reflects on the shortcomings,and gives suggestions for further research.It is found that the following measures are valuable for designing reading textbooks that support the cultivation of reading literacy.Concerning reading texts,the themes of each unit should be across domains and disciplines,and the contents should be progressive.The texts should create realistic situations and not neglect the cultivation of literature and aesthetic taste.Non-continuous texts should account for a relatively large proportion.Concerning reading-aid materials,appropriate amount of pictures should be timely compiled,and explanatory materials occupy a large proportion.Concerning the homework design,there should be a balance between quality and quantity and a proper proportion of tasks that require primary and higher cognitive levels,with a focus on training readers’ comprehension and inference ability.Concerning the knowledge system,linguistic knowledge and reading skills should be presented directly and itemized in textbooks,arranged scientifically according to the rules of subject knowledge and readers’ learning patterns.Corresponding exercises should be set up behind to practice and facilitate learning.The reading textbooks directed at the cultivation of reading literacy have the following characteristics: Each unit focuses elaborately on a theme.There are a lot of reflective questions in the training system that requires discussion in groups.It offers abundant multimodal resources.Accordingly,this kind of textbooks supports three teaching modes: thematic unit instruction,teaching model of collaborative learning and multimodal teaching.
