A Comparative Study Of Synonymous Frequency Adverbs A And AA

This thesis makes a study on the Adverbs of Frequency with same meanings, A-pattern and AA-pattern in mandarin. A-pattern is the primary form, and AA-pattern is the reduplicated form, they are Chang(?),Changchang(??),Lian (?), Lianlian(??),Lv (?), Lvlv(??),Pin (?), Pippin(??).The similarities and differences between the eight words will be discussed from the aspects of syntax, semantic and pragmatics in this thesis.At the level of syntactic, they have a lot of similarities. A-pattern and AA-pattern are both used to modify the predicate ingredients and they have the same position in a sentence. They both can be co-occurrent with the negative adverbs Bu (?) and can not be co-occurrent with a complement of quantity. But they tend to modify different predicate ingredient with different syllables. A-pattern prefers to modify a monosyllabic predicate ingredient, but AA-pattern prefers to modify a disyllabic predicate ingredient. And AA-pattern can be co-occurrent with De (?), but A-pattern can not. On the contrary, A-pattern can be co-occurrent with the adverbs of degree, like Hen (?), Jiao (?), but AA-pattern can not.At the level of semantic, A-pattern and AA-pattern both mean the repeating of the identical action or situational result in unite time. They have the same semantic features of [+measurement,+quantity,+fuzziness]. Meanwhile, they have differences in the quantity of repetition and the quantity of tone.At the level of pragmatic, the similarities are discussed in two aspects:the choice on language style and sentence pattern. Generally speaking, A-pattern and AA-pattern are both mainly used in written language. And compared with AA-pattern, A-pattern is more common in writing language. But Chang (?), Changchang (??) is more flexible. They both can also be used in oral language. When it comes to the differences of A-pattern and AA-pattern, we mainly discussed the different expression function. A-pattern tends to narrative while AA-pattern tends to describe. Based on this, AA-pattern usually increases the tone of evaluation.
