Art in14th century Italy has been considered by some art historians as dawn of the Renaissance, which forms a connecting link between the Medieval art and Renaissance art. The system of materials and techniques for painting formed in this period very much deserves an investigation because it has laid the foundation for traditional western painting since the Renaissance. Studied in this thesis is not only about the system of14th century Italian painting techniques, but also about the attitude of artists at that time toward and the ideals contained in the issue of materials and techniques.Treatment of the issue in this thesis is rather different from those found in currently available literatures, with a more comprehensive perspective and structure adopted in analyzing the Italian painting in14th century, which will be examined in terms of three subsystems concerning shapes, colors, and materials and techniques respectively. In course of the analysis, technical systems of different periods will be compared with each other as well as with those taught in nowadays institutions in order to discover the trajectory along which has developed the system of western easel painting techniques. The study will be concluded with a discussion on the relationship between techniques and art under the heading "Ideals Contained in Skills", with a comparative examination of the attitude of the14th century artists toward and their treatment of this problem. In accordance, different purposes of artistic creation in different ages will be observed under the heading "For the Next Generations or Just for the Immediate Moment".
