Reflections On Traditional European Easel Painting Materials And Techniques

This paper is a research topic triggered by my painting practice.From theEuropean Renaissance to the impressionist,the mainstream traditional oil paintingmaterials(painting medium and painting base)and techniques were selected,which weresystematically reviewed in five sections to sort out the development of this system.At thesame time,by analyzing the works of masters at all stages,this paper explores the role oftraditional oil painting materials and techniques in Europe,looks for the commonalityamong them,and pondered the depth problems caused by this.Combined with the analysisof modern and contemporary artists’ works,the paper finds out the influence of materialsand techniques on today’s art.It is hoped that this paper can provide a reference point forpractitioners of representational oil painting.
