With the increasingly market competition, the New Product Development(NPD) becomes more and more important to keep the advantage for the company development, The company must focus on NPD if they want to go ahead of the competitors. Nowadays, most of Chinese companies are under transition period from manufacturing to NPD, The capability of NPD compare to manufacturing still has many deficiencies which often lead to many problems.This thesis studies the NPD process of company D and reviews the literatures of NPD, project management, process improvement & process improvement approach. It also analyzes the D company project organization and NPD process based on company requirements. The process of project A is analyzed as an example by ASME method and Activity Based Costing(ABC) method to clarify value added and non value added activities. This thesis points out the influencing factors of the compressor NPD based on the characteristics of the industry. The time analysis of project design representative confirms the problem of current process. The problem of D company NPD process mainly exist in several areas. The problems of project scheduling are mainly related to project scope, technical solutions and product design qualification. The problems of product performance are mainly related to no clear process to guarantee. The project cost control need pay more attention on the M0 to M1 stage which should strongly link with project scope and technical solution.This thesis provides the improvement suggestions to solve the existing problems. It introduces critical chain method into NPD project management and defines the project scope management principles in order to strengthen schedule management. It adds detailed technical review as mandatory before cross function audit to ensure product performance. It upgrades the risk table to enhance severity high, occurrence low risk assessment and proposes to prepare technology solutions backup. It changes the project organization to strong matrix organization and sets KPI to guide the work. It introduces Tuckman model tool for researching the project organization stage, puts suggestions on how to improve the R&D team members competence. This thesis provides the theoretical and optimization method of improve NPD process which can be used the reference for similar situation.
