With the development of optical network technology, flexible optical network is facing a series of problems because of the localization of the traditional signal processing technology, such as high energy consumption, low efficiency and high complexity. Besides, with the development of communication network, the application of time division/wavelength division hybrid passive optical network (TWDM PON) in the access network is more and more extensive. TWDM PON technology has been significantly improved in the coverage and access number of users, and it can support large capacity and long distance branch transmission ratio. But at the same time, the large capacity transmission of the system brings pressure to the system switching node.In order to reduce the pressure of the system node and to enhance the capacity of the switching node, it is necessary to study the switching node of the access network. The variable bandwidth wavelength switch is a key technology in the development of flexible optical network and access network, therefore, in this paper, based on the requirements and difficulties of TWDM PON access network and elastic optical network,the application of variable bandwidth wavelength selector switch in smart optical networking is proposed.Supported by the National 863 program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, this paper focuses on the research of the application of variable bandwidth wavelength selective switch in smart optical networking and the main work is as follows:(1) This paper introduces the principle of variable bandwidth wavelength selective switch (BV-WSS) technology, involved in the proposed the structure of the elastic optical switch node based on BV-WSS, tests the performance of BV-WSS, and the core device BV-WSS is tested and analyzed.(2) For the limitation of traditional structure of PON, a TWDM access network architecture based on optical fiber backup protection and peer to peer communication is proposed and the equivalent experimental verification is completed. The direct communication between the ONU is realized by the backup optical fiber of the branch optical fiber, and it improves the utilization of resources.(3) A kind of hardware in the loop simulation platform based on OPNET and BV-WSS is designed, the control software and related interface of BV-WSS subsystem are developed, and the connectivity of the platform is verified by experiments.
