With the development of technology and the improvement of human living standards, the Stereoscopic 3D animation industry developed rapidly in recent years and it has attracted more and more attention in business and scientific researches. However, in the procedure of S3D animation production the stereo effect is difficult to control so that the perceived depth may not be obvious and visual fatigue may be created. In this paper, we propose a stereo effect adjustment method for prophase of S3D animation production.First, we derive the disparity range for best stereo view experience according to the relationship between stereo disparity and display devices. Then we summarize the five stereo effect setting methods and present the mapping method between the different stereo effects and the stereoscopic camera parameters. Moreover, we generate the disparity gradient maps according to the relationships among scene depth, stereo image disparity and stereo effect and further mark the regions exceeding the threshold of disparity in the gradient map based on visual comfort zone. In addition,we analyze the influence of stereoscopic camera parameters on the stereo effect and propose the method for optimizing the stereo parameters. Finally, we build a Maya plug-in to achieve three functions in our system including stereo effect one-key regulation, disparity visualization and identification of disparity for visual discomfort. We use the typical scene cuts of a commercial animation film "Legend of A Rabbit: The Martial of Fire" to verify our method. The experiment results show that comparing with traditional methods our method can effectively improve the efficiency of the stereo animation production with easy operation and high accuracy.
