With the development of multimedia technology and Internet technology, stereoscopic video is developing rapidly. Compared with the traditional2D video,3D stereoscopic video can provide us more intuitive perception; also can give theaudience more immersive feelings and visual impact. However,3D display has alot of imperfections that the contents of stereoscopic video are not compatible andthe limitations of the viewing environment make people feel visual discomfort inwatching stereoscopic video. The comfort degree of stereoscopic content isdirectly related to the viewer’s visual perception and physical health, which isbecoming one of the major constraints on the rapid popularization oftridimensional products, further more, the widely approbation by users. At present, there is no unified criterion for the comfort of the stereoscopic video, so the studyof visual comfort will have important significance. In this paper we first introduce the researching background of the Stereodisplay technology and the domestic/international researching situations of thevisual comfort. And then the human visual characteristics and imaging principle ofbinocular parallax are proposed, the visual uncomfortable feelings are caused dueto the parallax when watching a three-dimensional video, so the study ofthree-dimensional visual comfort is worthy. Then the subjective and objectiveevaluation criteria of the video quality are given, combine the human physiologyvisual comfort curve with the visual comfort evaluation mechanism, we propose avisual comfort model which conforms to human visual characteristics.Considering the particularity of the human visual mechanism-when watch avideo, we are interested in only some areas of the current frame, we propose anevaluation method based on the feature areas. In this paper we integrate the areasthat affect visual comfort, and then extract the motive areas between the adjoinframes by high-order detection, boil down the two areas to the feature area, thenobtain the human visual comfort model with the different weight of the different areas, by the theory of depth perception and space-combined technology. In orderto verify the reliability of the evaluation model, we first choose the12standardvideo sequences released by the international video organization, and then choose6current3-D hits, the observers evaluate by wearing the stereoscopic glasses. The experiment results indicate that the score in comfort calculated by themodel proposed in this paper is almost the same as the subjective assessment ofthose tested. So the model of comfort with good practicability has importantsignificance in the development of3-dimensional visual comfort evaluation.
