Because of the parallax between left and right viewpoints, stereo images/video can provide viewers with depth of the landscape and bring viewers immersive visual experience, making 3D images/video gradually become the mainstream of movie industry. On the other hand, too large parallax will cause visual fatigue, and this causes much research on the range of the comfortable parallax. Currently, there is no unified standard for the comfort parallax range, therefore, it has a great significance to study the influence of the parallax for the comfort stereo images.First, this paper briefly introduced the influence factors of the comfort stereoscopic image and the research of comfort parallax range, then further expounds the human visual characteristics and stereo imaging principle, and then details the practical principle of the horizontal parallax, vertical parallax, size deviation and rotating deviation. Because this paper mainly through subjective assessment studies the parallax factor, so it is necessary to improve the scheme of subjective assessment. This paper propose a new method to determine the number of observers and select the experimental data in subjective assessment. This method provides a more accurate and reliable evaluation scheme to study the parallax range.The paper concerns in the quantitative research of the comfortable horizontal parallax combining the characters of human visual attention. we shifted pixels to get stereo images with varying parallax and assessed them through a large number of rigorous subjective assessments. Then a stereo matching algorithm, a method of image segmentation and connectivity detection are proposed. Finally a conclusion is made that comfort stereo images allow more parallax than negative parallax,and the main object's parallax in the center of images should be between-0.375? and 0.84?, that best between-0.14? and-0.375?. Also we calculate the most comfortable parallax of several common monitors through this conclusion. Moreover, combining a method of step-by-step approximation, we make the right viewpoint move up or down, zoom and rotate to generate test images. Through subjective assessment, three conclusions are made that the vertical parallax of comfort stereo images must be less than 3.267310-3(rad), the size deviation must be less than 5% and the rotating deviation must be less than 2.5°.The conclusion In this paper can be used as a stereo image/video comfort evaluation standards, and also provides an important basis for making comfortable stereo images/videos.
