After the reform and opening-up,China's economy has been growing rapidly.China has been more connected to other countries in political, economic and cultural aspects. However, the relationship between the rise of China's comprehensive strength and the promotion of China's image is not that clear. In general, reports from mainstream media in western countries hold a negative tone when reporting China's political and social events, which impedes the building of China's positive image. However, most studies about China's national image only focus on political or cultural stories.Researches about national image in finance news are few.The reason could be that in general scholars consider finance news more objective. Therefore, this paper hopes to analyze Reuters'reports on China to testify whether this assumption is true or not. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the reports of Reuters,a typical finance media originally developed in Britain,to reveal the relationship between themes and tones in its reports on China's cutting overcapacity campaign and how China's image was constructed in the reports. At the Central Economic Conference in 2015,cutting overcapacity was emphasized as one of the major 2016 economic tasks. It has great impacts on economic reform and transition in China. Therefore,as one of major finance news agencies,Reuters publish relevant reports in a timely manner on its official website and its EIKON system. This paper analyzes the characteristics of the reports from the perspective of framing analysis.Chi-square test in quantitative analysis was applied in the paper.162 articles were analyzed from December in 2015 to October 2016 on Reuters English official website by searching keywords "China" "cut" "overcapacity".The reports were divided into 2448 paragraphs to analyze the theme, the genre and the tendency. The essence of the study to analyze Reuters' attitude towards China through scrutinizing its reports and show how it constructs China's image. From the macroscopic point of view, this paper also examined the time line of the reports. After applying chi-square test analysis, this paper draws two conclusions.First, the overall tone of Reuters' reports on China cutting overcapacity is neutral, but there is correlation between the theme of the paragraph and the tendency.Reports on themes such as industrial economy, macro economy are more objective. When the theme is trade friction, that is,direct trade conflicts between China and EU or the United States, most of the paragraphs are negative. However, the reports o this theme are mainly based on data and facts. Therefore,in general they are still objective.Second, reports' tendencies were significantly related to article genres. When the genre is telecommunications, the proportion of neutral reports is greater. Moreover, there is certain positive reports. When the report is a commentary, the proportion of neutral reports is less than telecommunications, and there are no positive reports. This paper focuses on the less studied foreign media's finance reports on China, and overturns the popular assumption that finance news is less subjective.Instead, this paper finds that political, economic and cultural news can all be subjective. In total, there are five chapters in this paper. From the macroscopic time line analyzing to micro-paragraph analysis of on Reuters financial reports, this paper analyzes China's image in Reuters' reports.Although there is still bias in its reports when there is a conflict between China and the West, but in most cases Reuters is objective. Therefore,China should pay more attention to international economic communication, and improve the quality of communication. When there are doubts from the West,China should provide fast and high-quality response to voice its stance and opinions.
