The Chinese Progress occupies the most important position of the Reformists'propaganda before the Reform Movement of 1898,which is considered news reports translated from foreign newspapers as the main contents and editorials declared by the Reformists as the characteristics.The reports provide plenty of the information about Japan while the editorials' comments about japan mirror the Reformists' Japanese views.This paper,taking correlative contents of Japan as the object,discusses Japan's role,status and function in The Chinese Progress.In view of the entanglement,study on the Japanese view of modern Chinese people has been the hotspot in academy.Unlike most of the researchers who concentrate on the figures studies in this field,the press in modern China could be a new research perspective for the research.This paper reveals the historical significance of Japan's role in The Chinese Progress.This paper firstly describes and understands the complexity of the images of Japan basing on the Japanese information concluded and induced from the column of Foreign News Translation;then discusses the Reformists' Japanese views from three aspects including content,role and attitude;lastly stresses the particularity of Japan by introducing the concepts of Sandai and Taixi and explains why Japan is a feasible method to overcome challenges for both China and the Reformists.
