A Study On Covering And Comments About Japan And Corea In The Reformer China

The Reformer China that founded in Macau in 1897,is an important position of public opinion for the Reformists to open up the people's wisdom and propagate the reform.It is based on The Chinese Progress(Shiwubao),and benefited from unique geographical environment and relatively free speech political environment of Macao,which makes it divorce from the control of the court and can "speak out what The Chinese Progress did not dare to say",and The Reformer China became the only newspaper that persisted in publishing after the 1898 coup.Whether from the enlightenment of ideological or the dissemination of Western learning,it had a tremendous impact on the society at that time.The Reformer China was prepared by Kang Youwei and He Tingguang,a wealthy businessman from Macau.The founders of The Reformer China were Kang Youwei's pupil mostly.Therefore,the articles in the newspaper basically conveyed Kang Youwei's understanding of Japan and Corea along with reformist ideas.The Reformer China has a wide field of vision,which contains a large number of reports or comments about Japan and Corea.The reports are mostly translated from representative newspapers in Europe and America,also some are quoted from the mainstream media in Japan.And the comments are written by the reformists in person.With providing a lot of information,the reports not only present an integral image of Japan and Corea,but also demonstrate their relationships with China in the late 19 th century and the early 20 th century,while the commentaries represent the views and attitudes of the Reformists towards Japan.This thesis will focus on such reports and comments,investigate and analyze the state of Japan and Corea at the end of the 19 th century,and the thoughts of the Reformists on East Asian countries(Focus on Japan and Corea),during the Reform Movement of1898.The structure of the paper is as follows:The introduction introduces the background of the topic selection,the theoretical and practical value of the analysis,and summarizes the domestic and foreign research status.Chapter ? gives a brief introduction to the course of establishment and the main creators of The Reformer China.Chapter ? classifies and examines the contents of the reports about Japan,trying to depict the national image of Japan at that time from aspects of political,economic,diplomatic and military,etc.Chapter ? generalizes the reports about Corea in The Reformer China,and investigates the state of Corea after being independent of China.Chapter ? focuses on the editorials about Japan,tries to analyze the mainstream views and consensus of the Reformists on Japan,and tries to summarize its characteristics.In the conclusion,evaluating the historical value and significance of The Reformer China's remarks on Japan and Corea,and also points out the deficiencies of the reformers' understanding of Japan and Corea.
