Since the Confucius College increasingly developing overseas,the “High-speed-Rail Diplomacy” and the “First-Lady Diplomacy ” etc.,Chinese government's attempts to improve its national image and explain its foreign policies to nations from abroad has never come to an end.The very recent public diplomacy events were the World Internet Conference held two times in Wuzhen,Zhejiang Province.No doubt,such events have marked another eye-catching attempt in public diplomacy.The thesis includes six chapters.First,the author introduced the background,purpose,meaning and the methods of this study.Second,the literature part presented the related researches on “Public Diplomacy”,“Strategic Diplomacy” and “National Image”;the existed researches on and contributions to the critical discourse analysis,especially the news discourse;the existed researches on “World Internet Conference”.Third,the purpose and the value of this study have been put forward in the paper: at first,how China is constructed in these targeted American and British mainstream paper media? Whether China has reaped its expected media effects?;then,the discourse strategies in the reporting of World Internet Conference have been analyzed in detail;finally,the author will delve into the reporting texts in order to find out whether there existing any ideology issue in these reports? If exits,how does it unconsciously affects its audience? Fourth,the theoretical foundations were presented: mainly Fairclough's three-dimensional model and Halliday's systemic functional grammar.Fifth,The samples and the data.This part introduced the criteria of sample-choosing as well as how the data was collected.Sixth,the detailed research process was presented.Seventh,the author generalized the thesis by answering the previous three questions,and the author also pointed out the limitations of this thesis and some suggestions for further study.
