Generally, it needs to be real-time to process array signals in applications such as radar, sonar, advanced mobile communication and radio astronomy system etc., which is a great challenge to the system's real-time performance, as algorithms of array signal processing usually are complicated to be implemented, and that's what this paper will conquer. The paper studied architectures of real-time complicated array signal processing systems based on a general radar system. According to the specifically comparison and analysis of some major architectures, a most suitable one was chosen to apply to the radar system that the paper designed. What's more, it also were done in the paper to estimate the amount of resources that the radar system needed according to the system's requirements, and to give the implemental strategy and tasks distribution in detail. The most important is that the method to design a radar system in this paper gives a perfect reference to people who need to design a real-time array signal processing system, as well. This paper consists of four parts, which are described as follows:Firstly, part one briefly described the radar system needed to be designed. Then, it figured out the specifications of the system's performance according to the analysis of the system's functions in detail. In the second part, as one of the two important parts in the paper, it studied some major architectures of real-time array signal processing systems. The part includes two sub parts, which respectly introduced three basic hardware architectures of FPGA+DSP, FPGA+CPU and CPU+GPU; four architectures of modular open systems of Open VPX, VXI, Compact PCI Express and PXI Express. Furtherly, this part analyzed the items introduced in every sub parts in detail, and figured out advantages and disadvantages of them.In the third part, it chose a suitable architecture for the radar system based on the analysis of part one and part two: FPGA+CPU as the basic hardware architecture, PCI Express as the interconnection bus, and PXI Express as the modular open system architecture. Besides, this part also preliminarily designed the radar system based on some chosen functional modules. As another one of the two important parts, part four mainly did three jobs: estimation of system's resources consumption, assignment of processing tasks, and design of the complete system. In addition, some process flows of the radar system also were illustrated in this part.
